Hi all:
New to the forum and a new 72 super beetle owner.

It’s in decent condition for the age. However, today it just will not start. I put the key in the ignition, turn it two clicks and hear the expected noises and see the lights. I turn it once more to kick in the starter and nothing. No clicks or anything. The second position noises change in pitch as if something is pulling against the battery but the starter just won’t initiate.

This happened the other week and I took it to a mechanic. While he saw the issue when I first towed it in, it stopped by the time he went to look at it and the ignition just started right up.

Anyone have any idea why or how this is happening? Any clues?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my 74 Super Beetle, I replaced my battery, starter and ignition switch, I had to replace the wire located under the back seat that goes thru the floor to the starter, I used a thicker wire and soldered and used shrink tubing on the plug ends, after 40 years it was completely corroded, once I replaced it there have been no starting issues, good luck

Maybe the electrical part of the switch went bad causing to malfunction.
