I finally got my car running! It idle's fine and starts up whenever I start it. When I drive my 72 super down the road it acts fine at first but I think when it starts to get hot? it just cuts off completely and doesn't want to turn back on until its cool again. any thoughts? ps. it idles fine for 5 or even 10 mins strait and doesn't show signs of wanting to shut off.
parts I have replaced to get it started, battery,starter,spark plugs, spark plug wires, 009 distributor, fuel pump flang(that was broken)fuel lines.

Just a though, but check the coil. I had an old Chevy p/u "68" that had the exact problem that you describe, and man I checked and changed all kinds of things... even took it to the local tune up shop. One day I happened to touch the coil while messing with distributor after it had died again and almost got 3rd degree burns. After I changed the coil it never happened again. As for checking to see if your bug is overheating. If you don't have any type of gauges, after you run it to the point that you think it is getting to warm, go back and grab the dip stick. First let me say that it WILL BE WARM... but if it is to hot for you to hold on to then yes your engine IS overheating. Also check and make sure that you fan belt IS adjusted correctly. And with the engine OFF reach in behind the fan shroud and feel how much distance there is between the fan and the shroud. This is adjusted be shims just like the Alt/Gen belt pulley and should be minimal.(just enough to keep it from rubbing)
