Reply with quote | #1 | i have a 1970 VW beetle and the clutch blew out. i got a clutch kit from napa and the pressure plate has a metal ring around the fingers of the pressure plate that wasnt on the original. When i put the engine back in the clutch lever now points to the rear of the car when it should be vertical. This makes it so the clutch cable isnt long enough to adjust. Whats the problem? i have an early transaxle and throwout bearing.
it should look like this

but it looks like this where the red line is

Reply with quote | #2 | Going by pic#2 what you have is a late model single side case transmission. It is not what was originally installed in your car. (change was around late 74) This tranny would have a sleeve on the inside that covers the input shaft and the throwout bearing slides back and forth over this... the sleeve is held in place with three bolts. The clutch cover plate that you have is incorrect for this transmission and is for the earlier model transmission that would have come in your model year. But depending on what type cover it is ( three finger or multi-finger) it can easily be made to work. If it had three fingers (or arms) that connect to the ring in the center then the ring is just held in place with some spring clips and can be removed. If it is a multi-finger clutch then the ring can still be removed (snap-ring) but is harder to do. The best thing to do would be to take the thing back to those wonderful boys at NAPA and tell them you want the right one. Olspeed __________________ 66 Ghia

Reply with quote | #3 | I believe You can change over to the new type of clutch throwout bearing which is a much better system IMHO.. but You would need to extend your clutch cable.. or get a longer one...
I have seen extensions etc on sites for off road buggies etc..
You cannot really make what you have to work without modifications
cheers
