I am looking for that all elusive rear deck emblem. I know its like looking through a needle in a hay stack. I used to have one, that I bought at a yard sale when i was in high school. A little old lady sold it for .25 cents  LOL I thought it was cute haha. I was wondering if anyone knew of any enterprising people that maybe made a mold cast with an original and made a few of them? It doesn't have to be original, just something to complete the look of the car. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

hi Chris

I don't know about the moulding of such an emblem but if nothing else, you could go to a place that specializes in graphics- sign companies- and have them create one in vinyl using that picture you have here. (this is the way many companies have signs put on their company vehicles)

Hello Chris,
Did you ever have any luck in finding a sunbug emblem or someone who could have them made? Am having the same issue and would love to add one to my wife's car.

The only place I ever see these is VW swap meets, and most are in pretty sad condition.

Hi Guys
Well, I've never seen one as they were no special editions in Australia...  Good quality Vinyl sticker should look good...
You could put the sticker on some 1/4 inch plastic or aluminium  and file it to the same shape...
What were they originally made of???  Alloy and painted ??

after looking at a closeup of that emblem....
I think kids would like them More than you...
maybe plastic and painted????

They were made of plastic. Many of them nowadays are therefore cracked or lost. Originally they were a dealer option on the Sunbug and some charged for it (I've heard 10US$). Purists restoring the relatively rare Sunbugs look all over for a well preserved emblem (as they do for the original shift knob).
Oh and yes, my kids do like the emblem. Remember, the sixties were only just over.

Hey Guys & Gals, If anyone can come up with a Sun Bug emblem, we will reproduce them. We already make the reproduction stripes, and want to add the emblem to our catalog. If anyone has an emblem we can borrow for a week or so we can take a mold from it without damaging it. I will be happy to pay for shipping both ways. Contact me at 480-545-1400 or bugzyla@yahoo.com

Thanks, Daryll
