I went to my first event with the newly created "Dry Heat Panzers VW" club last nite. We cruised to the drive in to see "Cars" the animated pixar movie.  Nothing I would ever go to see generally, but it was a club event. Anyway other than George Carlin's VW bus in the cartoon you'll note the VW Bug is there, but if you blink you'll miss them.  It's in a scene where you think you're seeing flys buzzing around some trash.  If you look close you'll note they are tiny VW bugs.

Stealing Home with Jodie Foster had a yellow (I think it was yellow) convertible bug that Jodie Foster's character drove.  Happy Gilmore with Adam Sandler. Wasn't it a bug that ran over him on the golf course? 40 First Dates, Drew Barrymore drove a Thing if my memory serves me correctly...

Commando with AH-nold has a bug in it. It shows up in one of the traffic scenes. Also, there are some busses on the ground when the plane that his character is supposed to be on lands in Brazil or something like that.

I saw 4 classic VW's on TV and in advertisements this weekend. Maybe it is a sign that mine is about to be competed.

  1. Blue Streak with Martin Lawrence. A bug drives by in a street scene with Martin's character outside the LAPD station. I can't remember if it is the scene right after he figures out the building where he hid the diamond is a Police station or when he is doing his little dance after he has delivered the pizzas to the station.
  2. Goodfellas with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci. Street scene shows one parked.
  3. Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks. The group that picks Jenny up from her grandma's trailer is in a bus. The second scene is the one where Jenny is sitting on the sidewalk playing her guitar and a guy pulls up in a bug and asks if anyone wants to go to San Francisco.
  4. This one took me by surprise. When I was in Advance Auto Parts this weekend, they had a cardboard sign hanging up over their parts counter. It had their logo on it with the words "Quality Parts" written on it. The car pictured was a blue bug vert. I am not going to take a stab at the year, but it was an older model. It had the bumper over riders and horn grilles.

I saw a news report on ABC News' website about a water-cooled New Beetle that got in an accident with a semi truck.  The Beetle got squashed between the median wall of the express way and the semi.  It was actually pinned sideways with, in the footage, what looked like only about 2 feet of air left to the interior.  Miraculously, the woman driving the VW walked away from the accident with no broken bones or lacerations!  Now THAT'S the new car for me, if I were to get one!

I was actually reading an article online about the new Smart car two seater that is something like a foot shorter then the Mini cooper.  it is gonna be rear engined and they said it would hold up in crash tests because it is egg shaped.  Sounds familiar huh?  The Beetle has been this way all along.

Yes, this car is coming to the US via Diamler Chrysler Benz

There is one of these cars at the factory behind my house.

How about the new movie coming out, Little Miss Sunshine. It is about a family trying to get their daughter to a beauty contest and they drive across the country in their VW bus. The bus was what caught my attention, but it looks like it would kind of be a decent movie.

I remember an episode of the old t.v. sitcom, "Alice", that featured a mid-Sixties Beetle.  Steel sun roof, if I recall correctly.  The waitresses wanted to buy it off of Mel, I believe, but couldn't afford to do so individually.  Much comedy ensues when they agree to go in together to buy the car collectively.  One funny scene was when Mel, I believe tried to reclaim the VW.  He wound up crawling in through the sunroof, as the girls had locked him out from within the car.  To keep him from fully entering the car, they cranked the sunroof closed upon his chubby belly.  I was a kid... that's all I remember.  Well, that and the fact that it was a Toga-White Beetle.  From what I recall, it was a 66 or before.

Television show:  Reno 9-11.  One of the cops stops a Type 2 bus under suspicion, 'cause they were driving 20 mph in a 45 mph zone.  Cop keeps sniffing in the bus windows because she says she smells "smoke".  Keeps sniffing, 'til she gets a contact buzz and winds up hanging with the guys in the bus for awhile, eventually letting them go.

The movie, "The Hills Have Eyes", in the scene where the guy walks to the end of the dirt road they wrecked on and finds all of the deserted cars. There are a few VW's in various stages of "rotting" sitting in the scene. Great movie too, for what it's worth.

I was watching Discovery Science channel the other day and they were talking about crash testing cars.  They showed a bug rear ending a '70 american car.  The car held up quite well, the front end was flattened.  The only bad thing they had to say about it was the the fuel tank leaked, but that was a problem with all cars of that era.

I was watching CSI the other night and you could see a nice 'Vert drive by the end of the street when they were investigating another murder. It was quick, but I rewound my PVR to see it in slow-mo. You can't slip a VW past me!
