I've just finished a complete brake job. Everything is new, drums, lines, shoes, pistons, hardware...everything except the pedal. When I'm driving. I can hear a slit rubbing sound that seems to go away when I touch the brakes. I assume this is an adjustment issue. Where my main concern is, is a rubbing/grinding sound that happens when I turn. It's loud and occasionally the wheel binds up a little. Being that it doesn't happen all the time, I'm inclined to think that it isn't the bearing... I don't really know what the problem is. I'm pretty new to the Aircooled Beetle world as I've only had this car for about 6 weeks. Any insight would very appreciated!

I have to agree that it is an adjustment issue that is causing the rubbing and binding. I think there is an article in the Tech Talk with Rick section on how to adjust the brakes properly.

I had a similar problem on my 74 too, I replaced my drums but found out when I put the races back in that the cast iron was sticking out further than the race, causing the grinding and the noise. I put the old race back in and ground out the excess. You would think if you bought something new there wouldn't be any problems but in some cases I have even had to go to a machine shop to clean up an out of round new drum.
