I just got my hands on a 75 super beetle and its pretty beat up my wife and i plan to bring it back to life but i really dont know where i should start i was thinking the interior since its my daily driver.. But what books and/or manuals should i buy.. and then i have some other Q's my main Q is that after buy the car i was driving home didnt notice anything real bad until i rolled up my windows and smelt gas/exhaust it was hard to tell which it would change sometimes a stronge gas smell and sometimes a strong exhaust, and after getting home i sat down to relax but had a serious migrane wasnt fun PLEASE HELP??? Due to the problem i was planning on new fuel lines and new gaskets and then also changing the oil and i was told SAE 30 do i have to use that or is there something better and can i get the fuel lines and gaskets at any autostore or do i need specific ones from a vw parts dealer ???? ANYTHING WILL HELP ME AT THIS MOMENT

Here is a post on the fix for fuel smell at superbeetlesonlyhttp://www.superbeetlesonly.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11143 . You will need to order the gaskets etc.. for the exhaust and oil change from a VW place like CBperformance or aircooled.net or JBugs.com. I run 20w50 all year in mine and do not have a problem. I used to run sae40wt. in the summer months but it is not available here any more so I just run the 20w50. Exhaust smell my be a leaky exhaust or bad heat exchangers. Get a Bently manual and the John muir book "how to keep your volkswagen alive" and you'll be able to tackel the basics.

Hi You cannot have too many manuals...lol I have about 8 or more... check out amazon.com for good used manuals.. You can do the mechanicals bit by bit while still driving the car. If You are going to paint the car, do it before doing the inside... although usually, the glass is taken out to paint the car.. but NOT always... cheers LEEhttp://community.webshots.com/user/vw68autobug
