I have a  motor with just the vw logo and letters AJ....no numbers...doesn't appear to be ground off...would this be a factory replacement case..or..is something fishy going on?

Most likely a replacement case.  The newest ones have nothing at all on them.  --Ryan

I don't know if You have your engine number checked each year like We have down here in Australia..

so, having no number... would cause problems.....

One of the locals just stamped the number from His original engine...

testing to see if attachments work on here... Lee

I would agree with Ryan on the case... it's a VW replacement. The one in my 76 is the same only it doesn't have the VW logo. As far as IM goes when I lived in the "big city" HA HA they told me that I could not change out the motor or I would have to switch back to the stock FI. BTW mine is marked with just an AJ also. So Lee it's great to have you back man! That was some terrible stuff going on down there. We sent some fire fighters down and the reports they sent back were horrible. Glad to see you are alright and I hope that your friends and loved ones are too.
