My new toy has me searching for many things and ideas. Lots of boggling ideas floating through my cluttered mind!

it has a stock 1600 AH. more then enough power for the short base, until a few thing get sorted out...  shifter with reverse lock out.
duel disc hyd brake front, goldwing maybe?
wheely bars are a major must have)

one of the things I see a lot is the chrome fan shrouds are almost all listed as 36HP.
is this a style, shape thing??  what is the big difference in on-road and off-road tin?
oil pumps, I see flat and dished?

I like your trike! on the fan shroud question. a 36HP shroud is just the style, Plus you can get them with or without the ducts for the cabin heat air, but before you buy pull the shroud from your engine and look inside. You will see that VW install a lot of vanes in the shroud to direct air to the important places where they wanted it to cool the engine (heads, cylinders and cooler) most aftermarket shrouds don't have these vanes or they have a poor copy of them that don't direct the air correctly. If you do buy an aftermarket shroud you want it to look just like the one you pulled off on the inside.

Unfortunately where I live now I am in the same boat you are. But I do get in to to my local ACVW shop to check things out from time to time. One nice thing about that is I have dealt with him since the 70's when I got my first ACVW so I can trust him and he is willing to show me new products when they come in. From talking to him and what I have seen(and purchased online) EMPI has lost alot of it's quality it's mostly Chinese junk nowadays. One thing I would suggest is to try to go to swap meets and see what you find there as I know that when these 36hp copies first came out they had the internal vanes in them and were close to stock as far as cooling goes. Other than that I would find a ACVW shop thats been around for a while and talk to the owner tell him waht you are looking for and let him know that you are willing to spend some money but not on junk.

Yes I agree with olspeed..
a lot of those aftermarket 36hp lookalikes aren't good quality and some are VERY bad fit also...  next to hopeless...
they should be sold with a big wide fan so at least You would know a lot of air is reaching somewhere.. lol
EMPI parts not longer have that magic with that name on them..
most are made in PRC [China] or Taiwan [Free China]
so beware that the very nice looking NEW part You have May not fit too well and certainly won't do the job as good as the original..  some don't do the job at all...     like
distributors with variable timing ... [all the time]     lol
alloy pulleys that don't line up with the top pulley..  YIKES
tappet covers that always leak... lol

cheers

Home made in 1975 with a 1974 drive line

getting some wiring sorted. builder had single feed lines with fuses to everything. LOL headlight and tail lights, 3 feeds and 3 fuses made a big mess of wires. now add a few more line for all the other things.

Fan shroud... think I will just repaint and then have no need to clean ill fitting or poor cooling chrome.

I do need wheelie bars!!  And am looking into a different (heaver)  front end with duel disc brakes. current apeares to be a 750 honda with unused drum brake.

Hi
that is one old and very strange looking trike....lol
and I wired My beetle up similar to that... lol
one wire for each light etc....
You do end up with heaps of wires...

cheers

LEE

PS: Painted shrouds work and also look better than those chromed ones....  chrome also holds the heat...     Lee
