The answer to this will somewhat depend on where you live. Buying a bigger mill is as simple as checking the various suppliers all of whom sell bigger displacement engines.  If you are close to a club or to the suppliers you will save shipping charges by being able to pick up the engine.  Otherwise, they will ship for a price.  As for fitting the engine into the engine compartment - this is the easy part.  All of cases are essentially the same size.  The engines use bigger cylinders and pistons to up the number of CC's and this does not occupy much more space than what is already available in the engine compartment, so " getting it in there " is not a huge issue.

You may also run into the evil emissions lows, depending on where you live. Big power usually means you won't pass a smog check... Keep it in mind.

Not at all true about emissions.  A properly built engine can pass just fine, if you build it with smog in mind, and you'll still have plenty of power.  The catch is that you won't pass the visual inspection with any of the external 'extras'.
That said, he said a '73 and with Ca being the worst place to be an auto enthusiast, '73 is exempt so it doesn't even matter.  --Ryan

I didnt think that external extras would make a difference... In Vancouver they dont check for stuff like that, so it may do some good to check your emission laws before looking into an engine

1600cc biggest most powerful engine for a stock beetle. Power house!:) Smokes the tires in first in the rain

If you have to worry about I.M. checks you will have to worry about external issues, at least up here in AK anyway. Up here it has to be stock per I.M. laws. They don't bother me about my 66 but my wife's 71 Nova needs to be I.M.'ed or a waver that only lets her drive it in the summer. So check you I.M. laws before you do anything to your motor.

Lucky you.  If you are in Nanaimo you are close enough to CIP1 - a major parts supplier.  Go onto their web site for details.  They are good people to get to know.  And if B.C. emission laws are like Ontario, you have nothing to worry about.  25 year old cars are exempt.  Our officials understand that 25 year old cars are not a significant source of pollution and cannot be expected to comply with modern standards for emissions.  I know that Arizona arrived at this conclusion earlier this year but some States don't make exeptions.

We just bought a 71 Super beetle without an engine. We are in Ormond Beach, Fl.  That's 1 mile north of Daytona Beach. Does anyone know of an engine for sale or at least someone in our area to talk to about VW's ? Thanks, Bob

Bob, you might check with any VW clubs in your area, they usually have some connections. Craigs List is another good place to find one.

You might try a wanted ad on Craigs List in the auto parts section, Bob. You might also want to check out the ads on thesamba.com. Could be one in your area on there, just click on classifieds.
