I have bought a 72 Super Beetle that has not been started for a very long time. I want to get it on the road. What do I need to do before attempting to start it?

Drain and replace oil. If oil smells of gas then replace with cheap oil and marvel mystery oil. Turn over engine with the coil out of distributor. Drain oil then repeat. I would change all plugs points and rotor. Clean or replace your dist cap. Check gas too to see if it smells old. If so flush all lines and tank with compressed air. I took my tank out and used kerosine to sit in it on a hot day all day. Then flush it with good gas. Hopefully you will not have to rebuild carb. Also check all brake parts for any sign of replacement. You can go but it is better to stop.

Thanks Wallace74. Took the gas tank out. Had about 3 gals of gas in it. Poured out and it was clear at first and then the rust appeared. Ordered a new tank and lines. Once I get her cranked I will start on cosmetics. Got to find some to repair the frame for the top. Needs a weld or two.
