I have installed an electric fuel pump in My 1968 Beetle. The car is still being restored.. Yesterday while working on it, including running the engine for a few minutes to keep the battery cahrged, I left the ignition and electric pump turned on for about an hour.. When I tried to start the engine, fuel came out of the muffler.. plus the engine didn't start [flooded].. I left it for an hour or so & then it started.. What I am wondering, is, Do I need a Regulator for the fuel line between the Pump [located under the tank] and the carburetor?? The pump is black plastic, not sure of brand etc.. Do electric pumps normally work at a higher pressure than mechanical pumps??
From what I have read about Holley etc pumps, they are made to pump fuel at high PSI for large modified engines.
Should I wait until I have the car on the road before investing in a fuel pressure regulator??

Should get a pressure gauge to see if it's even needed. You can get a mechanical handheld gauge for under $20US from most corner auto parts stores. Pressures from electric pumps vary quite a bit from model to model so it's hard to say. Since you flooded that bad, I'd suggest an oil change ASAP. --Ryan

I'll see if I can find someone with a fuel pressure gauge Ryan, and check the pressure... I know that a VW mechanical pump only puts out a couple of PSI from their pumps.. and the electric pump seems to work OK with the engine running and cuts out all the time OK... so You would think that the needle & seat would cut it off OK..
but naturally, depends on the pressure of the fuel ...
I checked to see if any fuel had gone into the oil, but there doesn't seem to be any... the engine hasn't been on the road since the major overhaul.. and the engine oil is still clean.. so maybe the rings kept it in the cylinder.. The engine wouldn't turn over at first when the cylinder was probably full of fuel...

You'd be surprised what a stock pump 'can' put out. The bakelite pump stands sometimes come in different thicknesses (bad QC) and can push the pressure to over 10psi. My thought on the oil is that it's just cheap insurance, you don't have 0 leakdown do you? Does anyone? --Ryan

Zero leakdown is difficult to obtain...
Yes. I'll do an oil change... to be on the safe side..

and there are engines and there are engines...
Mine is stock standard...

for the most part electric fuel pumps are internally regulated to 3-4psi. but it up to you if you want to buy a regulator. sorry about the bad luck of a "flooded" motor.

Well, there was this fuel pressure regulator on Ebay, so I bought it... I will see if anything different happens...
My Son Runs one & He doesn't know whether the regulator makes any different or not...
I saw a regulator on a beetle engine at a VW show last weekend...

I'll have to see if I can find someone with one..
I don't really want to buy one...
but a fuel pressure gauge would answer all My Questions, as at the moment I'm still guessing...
even with a regulator, I'll still be guessing...

Well the problem is gonna be this, how do you know how to set the regulator up if you don't know what it's regulating to? Pressure gauge is needed to set the regulator since they are adjustable. Also, what kind of regulator? --Ryan

Its a Holley.. fellow said it goes from 1 to 8 PSI...
I haven't received it yet, still in the post..

I checked My Engine oil Ryan, and although it looks nice & clean etc.. it smells like Gasoline...

So out it goes....
