Hi,

My son and I are working on his '72 SB.  After stripping the body for paint, it became clear that the car had been in a front end collision at some point.  The front apron and the sparetire well had both been damaged and poorly repaired.  We removed the damaged apron and spare tire well, and purchased new sheet metal.  Upon arrival, it quickly became obvious that the whole body must have been constructed around that spare tire well!  What is the process to install the new sheet metal?  Does one of the front quarter panels need to be removed to facilitate the install?

We pulled the body off the pan as part of the paint process.

Thanks for your time.

Are you talking about the front apron that is behind the bumper? If so wouldn't removing the fenders help?

Yes, removing one (or both quarter panels would help.  Since the quarter panels are in good shape, I'm hoping to avoid the work involved in cutting and re-installing them.

Since the wheel well is part of the trunk floor it looks like it would have to be cut out and the new one welded in.
